Abortion
Abortion
As Libertarians, Doug and I are pro-choice on everything, including abortion. We believe that abortion should remain a safe and legal option for women, not subject to any burdensome regulations or restrictions. I consider myself both pro-choice and pro-life, meaning that I do not want to see government interfering with a woman’s decision to have or not have an abortion, but I feel that the decision to have one is wrong. For both religious and philosophical reasons I believe that the fetus is a person, but neither I nor the state have the right to impose religious or philosophical opinions on the woman whose body the fetus occupies, and who has the greatest responsibility and incentive to decide such a delicate question regarding her own flesh and blood. When I interviewed for the position of clinic secretary at Planned Parenthood of Maryland in 1984, I said that I personally did not believe in abortion and would never have one myself, even if raped, but I did not believe in imposing my beliefs on others. This was good enough for PPM, and I was hired.
As so many members of the public are pro-life, and consider abortion to be the equivalent of murder, Doug and I both oppose the use of any taxpayer funds to pay for abortions. If elected, we will NOT allocate any state money at all for abortions.
